| BJP smells foul in collapse of transmission towers | | Demands early assessment of losses in snow hit areas | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 12 The Bahartiya Janta Party has demanded an inquiry into the frequent collapse of transmission towers in Doda and Kishtawar areas, alleging that heavy losses are being suffered every year due to faulty and poor quality construction of these towers which come down even on a slight down pour and snap the power supply to the twin districts. Party's district incharge Anil Parihar who was briefing the pressmen about the situation in storm hit areas of the twin districts here today said NHPC has been erecting the Transmission towers without taking into consideration the safer sites and the level of foundation, which results into huge losses every year. "Whenever there is snowfall or even heavy rainfall, these towers get dashed to the ground thus resulting into failure of power supply to areas for months together", Parihar added. Asserting that entire population in the two mountainous districts are without power for last over two weeks, he demanded early re-construction of damaged power transmission towers at safer places and an inquiry to look into the reasons which result in damage to the towers every year. He said heavy snowfall witnessed this winter have cut off all hilly areas of Paddar tehsil, Marwah- Warwan, Dachchan, Chatru, Thakrai, Kuntwara, Sarawan, Keshwan, Saroor, Bunjwah areas of Kishtwar district, hilly areas of Doda district including Thathri and Kandoth, Bhaderwah, Balessa, Kulhand, Marmat, Dessa from the rest of the country. He said these areas remained cut off from rest of thee country for more than a week. Parihar said that the condition of SPOs and VDC members who are performing their duties in high altitudes of snow covered areas is highly miserable as they have not been given wages for the last five months. He said, "One can imagine how these people are surviving and supporting their families" . He demanded that immediate provision of ration and fodder for cattles should be made for the people who survived the calamity, besides on spot assessment of losses and financial package should be made for giving compensation to the people whose houses were damaged in the snowfall.
