| RKJ official turns berserk, snaps power supply | | VIP broadcasts, instructions affected | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 12 The working at Government owned electronic media-- Radio Kashmir Jammu (RKJ) went out of gear as Prasar Bharati’s Station Engineer today went berserk and snapped the power supply to the entire Studio complex and important announcers’ booths. With a virtual break-down in attending to VIP recordings, despatches and recording of important instructions, the Programme and the Engineering Staff were mute spectators for the entire day, as the Station Engineer, P R Meena, reportedly ordered to snap all the power connections. His grudge was that he was not provided official vehicle to attend to some work. Senior officers in Radio Kashmir Jammu said that due to the crisis, most of the day to day programmes were deviated and important instructions, transmitted from Directorate General All India Radio New Delhi daily, were not recorded at all, as there was no power supply. Further, some programmes to be fed from Radio Srinagar were also not recorded as all the supply lines were snapped and lower staff directed not to provide the alternate supply, an Engineer on Duty told this correspondent. According to the reliable sources, the Station Engineer, who is himself the Engineering head, threatened the staff working under him of dire consequences if someone dared to restore the supply. Meena’s demand, the sources said, was that he should daily be provided official vehicle to pick-up and drop at home, for which the rule book says, he is not entitled at all. Following the handicap in absence of the power supply and the virtual breakdown, the matter has been taken up with the higher officials at the Directorate level. Assistant Station Director has noted the incident on part of the Station Engineer as ``a criminal act and unbecoming of a Government official’’. Station Director, Dr K C Dubey was not available for comments, since he was out of State in connection with some official assignment, the sources said. The sources further said that the erring official, who has a controversial track record, was sent to Radio Jammu last year allegedly on complaint basis. A number of officials, who were discussing the issue told SAN that there was no space for such elements to play with the broadcasting, particularly in a militancy infested State of Jammu and Kashmir where public is to be informed all times and its staff cannot take people for granted.
