| Azad meets Sonia | | Sun shows, it’s over to politics | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 12 With the status quo still prevailing on the organizational leadership of PCC in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today called on the Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi. Though an official spokesman said that the “Chief Minister apprised Gandhi about the situation arising out of the snowfall”, but it is believed that the discussion went beyond weather notes. There are many organization matters pending which are yet to be cleared by the Congress high command. After unceremonious sacking of Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed the post of the President of Pradesh Congress Committee is lying vacant. It was widely reported that Union Water Resources Minister Saif-ud-Din has been appointed as PCC Chief but no official announcement has been made by the Congress headquarters yet. It is a fact well known in the Congress that the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad would not like Soz to head the organization in Jammu and Kashmir as it would amount to emergence of two parallel power centers in the state. In this backdrop, Azad’s most trusted lieutenant and Minister for Social Welfare Abdul Ghani Vakil too had called on Sonia Gandhi last week to apprise her of the political situation in the state. Azad’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi assumed significance. An official spokesman for the Chief Minister, however, said that Azad briefed Sonia about the situation arising out of the heavy and widespread snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir and measures taken by the State government to deal with the crisis. The Chief Minister gave a perspective of the emergency unfolded by the severe snowfall and apprised Mrs. Gandhi about his government's quick response to restore facilities and disrupted communication and supply network. He informed her about the difficulties faced by the State administration in view of the tough topography and lack of communication links in the worst affected areas. Despite severe geographical handicaps, he said, the State administration lost no time in putting in place relief and rescue grid and monitoring mechanism which helped in saving human lives and immediate restoration of services. He said the restoration efforts were on in badly affected areas and teams of ministers and senior officers were constantly monitoring the situation. He had himself extensively toured the affected areas across the State. The Congress President expressed satisfaction over the measures taken by the State government in dealing with the situation and minimizing human and property loss despite a severe natural calamity.
