| Chill deepens, NH closed | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 13 After two days of improvement in weather, the National Highway today again closed following landslides even as the cold waves further deepened across the state. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed for traffic today due to landslides in Ramban district. Landslides hit the highway at Tringla area in Ramban, blocking the highway, official sources said adding the road has also sunk near Ramban. Two-three vehicles were trapped in the landslides and efforts were being made by the Border Road Organisation to pull out the trucks from the area. Over 500 vehicles were stranded on the highway. Meanwhile, cold wave sweeping Jammu and Kashmir intensified today with the minimum temperature plunging to minus 16.2 degrees Celsius. The hill resort of Pahalgam in South Kashmir witnessed the coldest night of the season as minimum temperature dipped to minus 16.2 degrees Celsius, met office said. A spokesman of the weather office said Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway recorded a low of minus 12.2 degrees while Kupwara in north Kashmir shivered in intense cold with minimum temperature of minus 9.8 degrees. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 6.3 degrees while Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded minimum temperature of minus 8 degrees Celsius, the spokesman said. In Jammu region, Bhaderwah was the coldest place with minimum temperature dipping to minus 6.4 degrees Celisus. However, there was slight improvement in the temperature in rest of Jammu region with Katra recording a low of five degrees Celisus while Jammu city recorded 3.1 degrees. Banihal and Batote areas recorded 0 and 0.8 degrees Celisus respectively, the spokesman said. |
