Legislators belonging to different political parties expressed deep concern over unchecked deterioration in the echo system in Jammu and Kashmir. The legislators blamed the Government for not utilizing funds properly with the result that despite several hundred crores of rupees having been spent on the conservation of the Dal Lake in Srinagar the world famous lake was getting choked and squeezed day by day.
This view was expressed during a meeting of the Environment committee of the Assembly here today.During the meeting Mr Ali Mohd.Sagar, chairman of the committee, and Mr Harsh Dev Singh Panthers Party leader accused the Government of not attaching due importance to the preservation of the Sal Lake.
Mr Harsh Dev Singh said that it was amazing that despite several hundred crores of rupees having been spent on the Dal development project there was no impact visible on the ground. The lake,he added, was fast shrinking. He and other members said that the Dal Lake was the face of Kashmir and speedy siltation and pollution had posed a severe threat to the lake.
Members wanted to know from the agencies involved in the Dal development project the details of the progress of the work. These agencies complained that in the past the development projects could not be implemented because of shortage of funds.Officers said that now the center had allocated adequate funds the conservation scheme was in full swing.
The issue of rehabilitation of those whose dwellings had been removed from the encroached lake water needed to be taken in hand as early as possible.
