Jammu and Kashmir has established a new record of medals haul at national level crossing the double century mark for the first time in the sports history of the state. With one and half month still remains in completing the calendar year of 2007-08, State has already touched the 210 mark in medals tally up to February 15. As per the records available with J&K State Sports Council, last year J&K had a medal tally of 117 at various zonal and national level competitions as compared to 143 in 2005-06. A Manipuri martial art practiced mostly in Kashmir, Thang-Ta has won highest 51 medals including 12 gold, 23 silver and 16 bronze. In the medals tally, Thang-Ta is followed by Sport Climbing, a game practiced mostly in Jammu Region of the state with 43 medals, which comprises 18 gold, 16 silver and nine bronze. Roller Skating and Gymnastics were close to each other with 25 (G-7, S-9, B-9) and 23 (G-13, S-8, B-2) medals respectively. Other three games making it to the double figure in medals tally are Fencing 14 (G-1, S-2, B-11), Kayaking and Canoeing 12 (G-3, S-3, B-3) and Skiing 10 (G-1, S-4, B-5). Those games which could not touch the double figure mark are Athletics, Korfball, Judo, Wushu, Wrestling, Tennis Ball Cricket, Power Lifting and Boxing. “I’m delighted to find the figure crossing the 200 mark for the first time but at the same time thankful to the players who have made it possible despite limitations of better infrastructure other related facilities,” Secretary, J&K State Sports Council, Ravinder Gupta told Sports & Allied News, adding, “the credit for establishing new record of medals won at the national level undoubtedly goes to the hard work of players and their coaches, who deserve appreciations and encouragement.”
