| Geelani’s man in PDP camp | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 14 With elections round the corner, the Peoples Democratic Party is wooing people from other side of the political fence to join its cadres. PDP has its eyes focused on taking the separatists elements in its fold to strengthen and consolidate its base in the Valley. Reports have been suggesting the some people from the separatist brigade may participate in the elections which has put the PDP on a note of caution. Before things go out of control, the party is getting in the separatist leaders who have known differences with their parent organizations. In such development, Abdul Khaliq Haneef, a former close aide of hardline Hurriyat Conference chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today joined the Peoples Democratic Party. Haneef, who unsuccessfully contested the 2002 assembly elections after snapping ties with the separatists, joined the PDP along with office bearers of his party Kashmir Resolution Movement (KMR) in presence of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti. Terming PDP's major policy initiative for resolution of Kashmir issue as pragmatic, Haneef said since KMR's agenda was similar to PDP, he has decided to work under the leadership of (PDP patron) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. While terming PDP's major policy initiatives aimed at the resolution of Kashmir issue as pragmatic, Haneef said that since KMR's agenda coincided with that of PDP, he has decided to work under the able leadership of PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He added that these initiatives would essentially focus on the exigency of ensuring relief to Kashmiri people particularly in the backdrop of the ongoing unrest. Haneef said that steps should be taken to end human rights violations, release of all political detainees, repealing of draconian laws including Armed Forces Special Powers Act(AFSPA), return and rehabilitation of divided families across the border including the youth and eradication of social evils and moral waywardness. Stating that he along with his party colleagues were for Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), ceasefire across LoC, soft borders, people to people contact, self rule and a just and democratic resolution of Kashmir dispute, Haneef said that he found PDP moving ahead with significant success on his envisaged vision, which motivated him to join hands with the PDP leadership. On this occasion MS Mufti, Mr Ansari and Mr Mansoor Hussan welcomed Haneef and his colleagues with garlands. Ms Mufti while talking to media persons later said that the PDP is open for all like minded people who want to help out people from their sufferings. She said that the party would work for mitigating of the sufferings of common people who have all along the 18 years of turmoil faced the brunt. |
