| Young army-men combat tough terrains | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 15 It is in conditions like heavy snowfall and rough weather that the troops in the tough terrain of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir need to be more alert than always. The reason being that the threat of infiltraion is high under these conditions. Major Dhundup Keronga, BG brigade, whose job is to look for suspicious movement and tell-tale signs, needs to remain out in the open for more than 18 hours a day. He says, ''Domination of the ground is important, but at the same time we cover most of the vintage points. From there we can dominate most of the area and track the foot prints marked on the fresh snow.'' Season's second snowfall, a heavy one, has begun on the Line of Control and has come with a warning. The civil population has migrated down to safer places but for Major Dhumpun and his men, the real hard work begins now, as inclement weather means more infiltration attempts. Every winter, army posts on the Line of Control are cut off by road and walking through the snow remains the only way out. At times, there is hardly any chance of walking back to the post for food. However, it takes just two minutes to cook the food. ''We help each other in our team, also with our office. In the manner such as one preparing maggi and the rest having it. We also carry water for others in order to help each other''. The army patrol returns to its post after the last ray of the Sun. It is then they prepare for the long night.Inspite of it being a tough job, the pride that goes along makes the young men adhere to it. |
