| Hunt for oil, gas; JU to host 2 days international workshop | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 15 Attempting to highlight hydrocarbon potential of Jammu and Kashmir as an attractive destination for global capital and technology, Jammu University is going to host a two days international workshop on `Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential of the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Basins in India, Pakistan and the Middle East'. Sources in the University told that department of Geology is hosting the two days workshop from February 21, where some renowned international geologists and experts on Hydrocarbon potential are expected to deliver lecture. The conference would be inaugurated by chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on February 20 at Jammu University, Prof GM Ghat convenor of the conference told News Agency of Kashmir. He said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir has a great potential for extraction of oil and natural gas and the department is aiming at highlighting the potentials. "The rocks here are similar in character to those of the hydrocarbon-yielding infra-Cambrian sequence in oil-rich Oman, North Africa and natural gas-rich Pakistan," he said Infra-Cambrian rocks were until recently considered devoid of petroleum but after the giant oil and gas fields of the world were discovered from these rocks in Siberia, Africa and other continents, the opinion has changed. The conference he said is likely to be attended by Jonathan Craig (Eni Milan), F. Said (NOC Libya), Bindra Thusu (University College London, Maghreb Petroleum Research Group), Chairman: D. K. Pande, Director Exploration,ONGC, Alan S Collins from School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, The University of Adelaide, Rasoul Sorkhabi, University of Utah, Energy & Goescience Institute, Salt Lake City, USA And Graham Shields, Department of Earth Sciences, University College London, Gower Street, London, UK Jokhan Ram of KDM Institute of Petroleum Exploration, Oil and Natural Gas Corpn. Ltd and Vinod C. Tewari of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology , 33 , Gen. Mahadeo Singh Road , Dehradun are also scheduled to read a table in the conference. |
