| Sangarsh to launch public opinion’, dismisses government claim | | Majority of schools lack infrastructural facilities, over lakh children out of reach’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 15 Dismissing the loud claims of the Government about infrastructure development in the education sector and bringing lakhs of children under the ambit of Sarva Shiksha Aabiyan in the state, the Sangarsh, a movement for Justice, Equality, Peace, Prosperity and Brotherhood, has said that thousands of schools are without its own buildings, nearly 1500 school buildings are in dilapidated conditions while 1.08 lakh children are still out of reach of the school. In its memorandum presented to the Director School Education Jammu today, the Sangarsh said that so far government’s latest report for 2007- 08 is concerned, a total of 4822 primary, upper middle, high and higher secondary schools continue to be without own buildings across the state, whereas 1474 existing buildings are in dilapidated conditions. Quoting the report, the memorandum further said that 4119 primary schools and 628 upper middle schools are without own buildings for the last several years while 1747 primary schools provided with buildings are in shabby conditions. Students of 4052 primary and middle schools have not been provided with even drinking water and toilet facilities, the memorandum alleged. Similarly, 68 government high schools and seven higher secondary schools are running in private accommodation whereas 125 high schools and 101 higher secondary schools even lack the drinking water and toilet facilities. The memorandum further revealed though 3.67 lakhs, ‘out of school’ children were identified before the flagship program of Sarva Shiksha Abiyan in the State, 1.08 lakh students are still out of reach. Vikrant Sharma, who along with Suresh Kumar and Ramit Gupta, submitted the memorandum, maintained that revelations made in the official report itself exposes the tall claims about infrastructure development in the education sector. They said that the committee on universalisation of secondary education of the Central Advisory Board of Education and Mid Term Appraisal Report of the 10th Five Year Plan conducted by the Planning Commission has called for a major initiative for expansion and improvement in the infrastructure of school education sector. The Sangarsh has warned of launching public opinion against the government if proper policy for reviving the infrastructural deficiencies is not worked out within next three weeks, Sangarsh leaders said. |
