| Conserve biodiversity for posterity: VC | | BGSBU training programme concludes | | Early Times Reporter Rajouri | Feb 17 Centre for Biodiversity Studies of the BGSBU organized a valedictory function of the four-week vacation training programme for the students of Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu region. Masud A. Choudhary Vice Chancellor BGSBU was the chief guest of the function while several senior officers, faculty members and representatives of district administration the various other guests. The Vacation Training Programme (VTP) was an attempt to foster concern and reverse the growing trend of shunning science as a career among the emerging generations among School children of nodal schools of Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu regions. The VTP was part of a Department of Biotechnology of Govt. of India funded project of the Centre for Biodiversity Studies (CBS) of BGSBU. CBS has the distinction of being one of the eight institutions identified as Regional Resource Agency (RRA) by the Department of Biotechnology for implementation of the DNA Clubs programme across the country. Under this programme the BGSBU has selected 10 nodal schools representing various socio-economic backgrounds in all three regions i.e., Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu. At the onset Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed Zarri Scientist and J&K State Coordinator of this Programme presented the aims and objectives of this national project and the four week Vacation Training Programme. Vice Chancellor in his address expressed the need for such initiatives for fostering concern among the emerging generation for biodiversity conservation. He congratulated the Centre for Biodiversity Studies of the BGSBU for getting selected as one of the eight RRA for implementation of this prestigious national level programme and the project team for successful completion of the state wide training programme. Mean while prizes for various competitions organized during VTP were distributed by the Vice Chancellor and other dignitaries. Certificates and mementoes for participation in the VTP were also presented to all Trainees. Other who spoke on the occasion including Registrar and various other senior faculty members expressed their appreciation over the achievements of the Centre for Biodiversity Studies and contributions it has been able to make through various research, extension education and eco-restoration projects. Zarri in his vote of thanks attributed the successful start CBS to the dedication of the project staff and also foresight and support of the Vice Chancellor BGSBU Masud Ahmed Choudhary.
