| Property worth crores damage as 35 shops gutted in fire | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Feb 17 Property worth crores of rupees was destroyed in a devastating fire which engulfed at least thirty-five shops, mostly belonging to Kashmiri Pandits, in Kupwara town of North Kashmir. Reports reaching here revealed that a shop complex, housing about thirty-five, shops was reduced to ashes in main town of Kupwara. "Fire started in one of the shop at Mandir complex at Iqbal Market this afternoon", a local resident said adding, "Within few minutes the fire engulfed the entire complex and local residents and shopkeepers rushed to the spot to control the fire". One of the shopkeepers Satish Kumar said that the fire started in on of the shop and as it was Sunday no one noticed the flames till it engulfed the other shops. Property worth crores of rupees was destroyed in the fir, reports said adding the shopping complex mostly housed the shops owned and being run by Kashmiri Pandits of the area. The local residents staged a strong demonstration in the area in protest against the police authorities who failed to depute the fire brigades in time. "The locals had a tough time to control the fire as fire tenders arrived very late to the spot", Abdul Gani, a local said. Police said that it has registered a case in this regard and has started investigation as to ascertain the cause of fire.
