Early Times Report
Poonch, June 12 : A tribal family belonging to Banjara community was beaten to the pulp by policemen at Behramgala naka for bribe as the family was moving to Kashmir from Mendhar along with their cattle with a valid permission, sources said here Tuesday.
The family members left Mendhar on Friday last for Kashmir along with their milch animals and cattle loaded in five vehicles. They were stopped at Behramgala at 8 pm for routine checking. They showed the valid permission to policemen but the cops frisked one of the family members and took him away to police post. When he did not return, other family members got worried and started searching him.
The head of the family Mohammad Din was taken to the police post and beaten to the pulp by Sub Inspector Sukhbir Singh who was on duty at the post. The cops were demanding money.
Din's daughter Afida Bui and son Alam Din were also beaten by the cops. After extracting money from the family, the cops released their member at 1 am and threatened the family not to disclose the incident before anybody.
The drivers of the vehicles were also beaten by the policemen despite having a valid travelling permission of milch animals and cattle from concerned authorities.
Surprisingly, at naka the credentials of the permit were mentioned in the register by the cops on duty, said Afida. She said even as the cops kept them detained, nearly 60 other vehicles carrying bovines were allowed by the policemen against money from the smugglers to go to Kashmir via Mughal road which has become a choice route of bovine smuggling.
SHO Surankote Mohammad Afzal Mir assured that action would be taken against the cops who were involved in malpractices.
