| Police armoury to be overhauled shortly | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Feb18 The Jammu and Kashmir police has started preparations for the 2008 Assembly polls well in advance. Taking first step in this direction the state police authorities have decided to carry out major overhauling of its armoury machines and tools and in this connection the concerned officials have been asked to procure about 80 items required for cleaning and updating the armoury. The police central stores at Zewan in Srinagar and the other in Jammu would be supplied the material required for overhauling the police armoury.Official sources said here today among the items to be procured for overhauling the armoury included two cartridge disfiguring machines with a capacity of disfiguring two to five tons of empty fired cartridges,rifle rack steel,high speed hack saw blades,rifle oil rod cleaning equipment for SLRs,rifles and pistols and rifle linsed oil. Sources said that though overhauling of the police armoury was an annual drill,this year there has been some delay in completing the exercise and directions have been issued to the concerned authorities to get the tools and other equipment required for updating the armoury by the end of next month.The state Government has decided to grant some concession to those local small scale units which had the means to supply some of the required items. Official sources said that overhauling of the police armoury had become imperative in view of the ensuing Assembly election and in the context of reports that groups of militants were planning to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir from across the LOC soon after the border routes became passable with the melting of snow from April onwards.
