| Soz getting acts together for uphill task | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 19 The Union Water Resources Minister Saif-ud-Soz is expected to be in this politically surcharged winter capital city coming Sunday. He is reported to be getting his acts together as the task ahead is quite uphill. Soz, a relatively new face in the Congress party, is now the president of the organization which has a history of factionalism and lobbyism in Jammu and Kashmir. His appointment comes after a silent but stiff opposition from many lead players in state unit of the Congress. The task ahead for the new PCC president is literally twin edged. One that he has to narrow down the lobbyism and factionalism in the party and second that he has to face elections in an environment of rag tag coalitions. There is little doubt that Soz has massive backing of the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and also support of an influential lobby of party leaders but things in Jammu and Kashmir are not that easy to handle. Soz has been put in a parallel role with the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and it has to be seen keenly that how much he succeeds in getting some people along. Soz's association with Congress is not too long. While on the other hand Azad has to his credit making a history by bringing back his party to power after 30 years, when he led the party as PCC chief in the 2002 elections. Both Prof. Soz and Mr. Azad have said that they would work in tandem to safeguard the party's interests. But at the same time the pressure mounted by many State Congress leaders to hand over the PCC baton to Mr. Azad does indicate that all is not well with the party. It goes without saying that his appointment as PCC chief will normalise relations between Congress and its major ally PDP in the State which according to insiders was one reason why he was chosen for the post. But how he takes the electoral struggle to the people, that too by maintaining the balance among three regions of Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh, will be watched by the observers. Analysts are of the view that in case he succeeds in striking a pre-poll alliance with the PDP, it would not only benefit him as PCC chief but also the party in looking towards the return of power in the State. There are other issues also which many believe Prof. Soz will face while delivering as the man from Delhi. Will he be given a free hand in nominating partymen for the polls or will he have to go purely by Mr. Azad's or Delhi's choice? Another crucial question is the time Prof. Soz could give in managing the party affairs, that too at the time of elections. |
