| India has lost Kashmir opportunity: Omar | | 'Had Prime Minister heeded my warning, things would have been different' | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 20 If National Conference president Omar Abdullah is to be believed, India has lost the opportunity of resolving Kashmir issue because his warnings have not been heeded to. Addressing a public meeting in border stretch of Hiranagar today, the National Conference president said that two years back he had told the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resolve Kashmir issue within one year otherwise the opportunity will be lost forever. He said, after my visit to Pakistan and meeting with Parvez Musharaf, I had briefed the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh and had categorically told him that India and Pakistan have one year to resolve the Kashmir issue and find a dignified solution acceptable to India, Pakistan and the people of Jammu and Kashmir". Omar further said, I had predicted to Dr. Manmohan Singh that if we do not resolve the Kashmir issue by the middle of 2007 we will loose a golden opportunity because the situation in both countries would change". Now with the situation that is emerging in Pakistan and the coming elections to various states in India and then the general elections in India it is most likely that the solution to the Kashmir issue will get deferred. Omar said it is unfortunate that both India and Pakistan lost this opportunity by not changing their stated positions and getting influenced by the mindsets prevailing in the two countries about Kashmir. Omar Abdullah who has been a former External Affairs State Minister said that a statesmenly approach both on the part of Indian and Pakistani leadership and stable internal situation in both the countries is essential for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. He said he hoped that in the coming days the bilateral relationship between India and Pakistan improves which alone can ensure peace in Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah said the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir must rise above petty political squabbles and must work for a better Jammu and Kashmir so that the future generations do not suffer. He expressed the fear that if the political parties behave in an irresponsible and a reckless manner for their vote politics and divide the people of the state into small groups the future of Jammu and Kashmir will be in jeopardy and the next generation will curse all today's political players of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He said history will not spare politicians of Jammu and Kashmir if they do not play a constructive role at this critical juncture of time. Omar said an election is a battle of ideas and as responsible politicians all political parties must keep the electoral politics confined to the same. Omar said it is unfortunate that the PDP and the Congress are indulging in double speak on all issues for their political ends. Referring to the deployment of troops in J&K, he said while in Kashmir the PDP advocates the removal of the forces, the coalition partner the Congress in Jammu advocates the stronger presence of the armed forces in J&K. This he said is unfortunate because the two are running the government and still indulging in different political games in different regions just to keep the people guessing and confused. He said the lack of seriousness in the approach of the coalition government will adversely affect the political scenario in Jammu and Kashmir.
