As govt fails to establish FTCs, disposal of rape cases shoots up | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 27: For the purpose to achieve the aim of providing speedy justice particularly to rape victims, the Supreme Court had passed a ruling wherein the union as well as the state governments were directed to constitute Fast Track Courts (FTCs) with the sole objective of early disposal of cases so that timely justice could be provided to the victims of such heinous crimes. However, successive state governments did not make any serious effort to introduce the concept of FTCs in J&K. The non-establishment of FTCs in J&K has become a big impediment especially for the rape victims and their families, whose wait for justice stretches too long that they sometimes develop depression due to mental stress. The constitutional guarantee of speedy trial is an important safeguard as it is implicit in Article 21 of the Constitution of India. The pendency in disposal of rape cases at different courts of the state is increasing with each passing day but the successive state government hardly paid any attention towards this growing menace. The governments after governments ignored the Apex Court's direction and did nothing in setting up FTCs due to which the rape victims and their kin have no other option but to go through the ordeal of long wait in getting justice. Pankaj Mohan, a businessman, advocated the introduction of FTCs in J&K. He said the establishment of FTCs will reduce the burden of pending rape cases in different courts of the state. He said laxity on part of the successive state government to constitute FTCs is unpardonable but it is never too late and the present regime should explore the possibilities to establish FTCs as early as possible. Anil Kumar, an employee in private sector, said that the failure of\ successive state governments in setting up FTCs proves that they are least bothered to provide early justice to the rape victims. The politicians only know how to make hollow promises of protecting the dignity of women but in reality they have scant regard for the women. The formation of FTCs is a dire necessity as it will not only help in scaling down the amount of pending case in several courts of the state but it will give an opportunity to the rape victims to get speedy justice. Sanjeev Sharma, a businessman, criticized the successive state governments for their failure to perform their duty of providing speedy justice to the rape victims by not establishing the FTCs. This lapse of the successive state governments needs to be mended at the earliest. FTCs are a ray of hope for the several rape victims to get justice in time. |
