| Battered allies put united face before ‘high command’ | | |
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 22
We are one, we don’t make fuss and we are disciplined –this is what the visiting Congress president Sonia Gandhi was given to understand by leaders of coalition when she arrived at the Udhampur airbase this morning for her onward journey to the snow-hit areas. When the Congress president reached Udhampur, there was a statement of discipline and cohesion and there was no room for sycophancy. The reception committee was limited, divergent and drawn from the top. Unlike the long list queue of Congress leaders which usually line up to receive their senior party leaders and make their faces known, today there were only three political leaders to welcome the Congress president. At airbase, Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister Shivraj Patil were received by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, new PCC chief and Union Water Resources Minister Saif-ud-Din Soz and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti. Presence of Mehbooba Mufti at the airbase to receive Sonia Gandhi underlined the growing level of comfort between the Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party. This reflected burial of egos as one can recall that the top PDP leaders had stayed away when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had visited Jammu last year. After formally receiving Sonia Gandhi, Mehbooba returned to Jammu, Soz left for Srinagar and only Azad accompanied her to the remote areas of Kishtwar district where she met the victims of recent snowfall.
