High alert in Jammu and Kashmir, mobile services suspended in some areas | Burhan Wani's death anniversary | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 8: Restrictions have been imposed in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, the second death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. As a precautionary measure in the valley, mobile internet services were also suspended following the death of three civilians yesterday as well as the threats from Hizbul Mujahideen to create law and order problems on the anniversary. As per a report restrictions were also imposed in Tral, in South Kashmir's Pulwama district as well as in Nowhatta and Maisuma police station areas of Srinagar, a police official was quoted as saying. He further added that the restrictions were imposed to keep the law and order in check and to prevent any untoward incident. The killing of Hizbul commander on July 8, 2016, sparked massive outrage and protests in the valley. 23-year-old Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kokernag area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district. In the clashes after Wani's death, as many as 85 people were killed and over a thousand others were injured in the clashes between the security forces and protestors. This led to major curfews as well as shutdowns in the Kashmir valley for a period of over four months. The valley was put on high alert, especially parts of south Kashmir, which has begun a region of insurgency with increasing rebellion in favour of militants. On the first death anniversary of Burhan Wani last year, the whole area was heavily guarded by the security forces. All roads to Wani's home were blocked while the travel between villages became impossible. |
