Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today called for devising a transparent fast-track mechanism for filling up thousands of pending vacancies in various government departments to cope up with the unemployment problem.
Addressing a day-long convention of the party workers at Sarwal today, PDP President Ms Mehbooba Mufti said the massive infrastructural upgradation that has taken place in various sectors during the past five years needs to be supplemented with adequate manpower and the Government must now address this issue on priority. She said given the procedural delays confronting the established recruiting agencies like the Public Service Commission and the Services Selection Recruitment Board (SSRB), the Government must evolve some alternative mechanism to speed up the recruitment process. "Thousands of posts are lying vacant in education, health, engineering, social welfare, agriculture and police departments, to name a few," she said and added that the manpower shortage is adversely affecting the functioning of these sectors and the Government must come out with some mechanism to fill up all the vacancies in shortest possible time.
"While on one hand, the educated unemployed youth are dying for jobs, on the other the Government departments are suffering because of the manpower deficiency," Ms Mufti said and added that the Government must launch a time-bound recruitment process so that all the vacant posts are filled up within a couple of months. "The recruitment process should be made transparent so that the deserving candidates get the justice," she said.
Expressing concern over the plight of thousands of adhoc and contractual appointees, Ms Mufti said the fate of these appointees is hanging in balance and unfortunately most of them have now even crossed the age-bar for Government appointment. "The Government must consider regularization of all such adhoc and contractual appointees as they have been performing their duties in difficult circumstances and can't be left in the lurch," she said and added that similar mechanism must be adopted for the regularization of education volunteers as has been done in case of Rehbar-e-Taleem.
Mehbooba said although such measures would not address the unemployment problem fully, but atleast a major chunk of the educated unemployed youth could get adjusted and at the same time the Government departments would also get the necessary manpower.
The convention was organized by the local PDP leader R K Bali.
PDP leaders Ved Mahajan, Dhaman Bhasin, Shanti Devi, Surjit Singh Salathia, Renu Azad, Surjit Kour, Ashok Jogi and Rajesh Bhat were present.
