Governor, CM hail JU's dent into international academic arena

Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today complimented the University of Jammu for making dent in academic arena at international level.
Addressing the University Council meeting here this morning, the Governor noted with satisfaction the tie up of JU with Mauritius and Canada, saying that the international exposure will immensely benefit students, who in this age of knowledge, cannot remain confined within limited precincts.
The Governor said that reaching out to students in far-flung areas through extended campuses at Bhadarwah, Udhampur, Kathua and Poonch is a welcome step aimed at satiating the higher learning quench of youth. They will in turn augment the already flourishing human resource in the country in modern and professional courses, he added.
General Sinha referred to the infrastructure development and said the Zorawar Singh auditorium has emerged as a showcase of the University while the Bio-Tech complex can be termed as one of the best in the country. He said he was impressed by the progress registered at Bhadarwah campus and hoped that the work will be expedited at other places as well.
The Governor, who is also Chancellor of the University, congratulated Professor Amitabh Mattoo, Vice Chancellor for being honoured with Padma Shri and Professor Riyaz Punjabi, Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University for his international recognition as Honorary Professor of the International University, Vienna.
The Chief Minister, while appreciating the progress achieved by the University of Jammu, hoped that the University of Kashmir too will achieve highest pinnacles in academics. He recalled the glorious academic record of KU, saying that it used to be one of the premier institutions offering variety of courses. 'Efforts will have to be redoubled to make it an institution of excellence of repute', he added.
Azad also congratulated Professor Mattoo and Professor Punjabi for the honours bestowed upon them.
Unfolding his vision for Jammu University, Professor Mattoo reiterated that it is going to be a vibrant hub of academics as also cultural and sporting activities. He gave a presentation on achievements and future plans which inter-alia include development of infrastructure and new vistas of opportunities to students and faculty for making their mark in different disciplines.
The VC announced that Zorawar Singh auditorium will become self-reliant soon while elaborate lodging has been made available as transit for visiting academicians. He said that the Department of Management Studies has been rechristened as Business School, which has been adjudged as one of the ten best in the country. Similarly, Bio-Tech complex ranks sixth in the country. He said that an International Resource Cell has been established in collaboration with British Council while research projects to the tune of Rs 10 crores have also been formulated.
Professor Mattoo said that the new building complex for Law School has been commissioned while the faculty members continue to be accredited and honoured at the international and national levels. A students' charter has been released and technological developments made use of in e-profiles of the faculty members besides updated website.
The University is introducing such courses, particularly in its extended campuses, that will not only add to knowledge economy but will also have a ready job market, the VC said, adding that Jammu and Kashmir has to be a part of knowledge evolution taking place around the country.
As many as 103 private colleges and 30 government colleges are affiliated with the University of Jammu, which are engaged in imparting higher and quality learning in the region.
Prof Mattoo also made a mention of the 12th Convocation of the University and Special Convocation held to honour Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh with D Lit degree.
The Council had a detailed discussion on various agenda points dwelling on further improving the academics and ensuring faster infrastructure development in the main campus and its extended campuses.
Minister for Higher Education, Mr Gulchain Singh Charak, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Professor Riyaz Punjabi, Principal Secretary to Governor, Dr Arun Kumar, Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education, Mr Pramod Jain, Commissioner/Secretary, Finance, Mr B B Vyas and Registrar of Jammu University, Prof G S Samyal besides other members of the council were present in the apex level meeting of the University.
