| Kids of SRTC staffers burn books; demand release of parents’ salaries | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 25 Hundreds of employees of Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport corporation (SRTC) accompanied by their family members including school going children on Monday participated in a protest march demanding early release of pending salaries. School children marching in the front later torched school books expressing their anger against the state government. The employees of the fund starved corporation earlier went on indefinite strike on February 19 to protest against the delayed release of salaries. The employees were not paid salaries by the state government for last five months due to cash crunch. Holding placards and empty tiffin boxes in their hands children accompanied by their parents led the protest march and shouted anti- government slogans as they crossed busy Tawi bridge. Raising slogans against the SRTC management, the agitated employees marched towards Bikram Chowk and staged a sit in dharna in the middle of the Tawi bridge throwing normal life out of gear.Traffic remain disrupted on both sides of the Tawi bridge for over two hours due to the protest march. Large number of women also participated in the protest rally. “I am participating in the protest to wake up state government from its deep slumber.My father has not been paid salary for the last five months and i have not deposited my school fee,Abhilash said.Arun his younger sibling said, i came out with empty tiffin to highlight the misery.He said my father has not paid my school fee and i fear if it is delayed further the school may not allow me to sit in the examination. One of the leaders of the employees union Amrik Singh said, "despite assurances given by the Transport Minister Hakim Mohd Yaseen and the Finance Secretary, nothing was done to redress the demand of the SRTC workers. He alleged that the state government has failed to honour its commitment.The workers were given only false assurances and their salaries were not released. The entire fleet of the SRTC is presently grounded and no transport service is available to commuters traveling via SRTC fleet to remote hilly areas across the state.Inter state bus services were also hampered for last one week due to ongoing strike resulting in the huge losses to t he corporation.State Transport Minister Mohd Hakim Yasin said, the state government is aware that employees were facing many hardships. He said the salaries will be released soon.He also appealed to the SRTC employees to join their duties and not wait for salaries to be released.I assure them that their salaries will be released soon,Yasin added urging them to join duties to further cut down losses.He said the corporation is facing cash crunch due to falling revenue and increasing expenditure. |
