MoS for External Affairs to visit Greece, Romania
8/26/2006 6:50:11 PM

Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma will make a three-day official visit to Greece which will be followed by a three-day long visit to Romania.

Sharma will lead a delegation that includes Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Joint Secretary (Central Europe) V. Ashok.

During his visit to Greece from August 27 to August 29, the Minister will hold discussions with Greece`s Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and Tourism Minister Fani Pali-Petralia.

The talks are expected to cover bilateral relations and major global issues of interest to both sides.

The visit comes close on the heels when Greece is set to take over the Presidency of the UN Security Council in September.

Among the various challenging issues, the Council is dealing with post-conflict situation in Lebanon and election to the next UN Secretary General.

Indian exports to Greece have risen considerably in recent years, from US Dollar 115 million in 2000-01 to US Dollar 307 million in 2004-05 and are likely to touch US Dollar 467 million in 2005-06.

About 12,000 Indian migrants mostly from Punjab are in Greece working in the agricultural sector.

Sharma`s Greece visit will be followed by an official visit to Romania. On the invitation of Romanian Foreign Minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, Sharma will visit Romania from August 29 to September 1.

Sharma will be the special guest speaker at the Annual Reunion of Romanian Diplomacy.

During his visit the Minister is expected to call on Romanian President Basescu, Vice President Vacaroiu and Prime Minister Tariceanu, besides holding delegation-level talks.

Romanian President is scheduled to pay a State visit to India in October.

Romania had conveyed support for India`s candidature for a permanent seat in the enlarged Security Council during Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat`s visit in October last year.

India-Romania economic ties have witnessed rapid growth in the last few years. They have more than tripled during 2002-05, reaching US Dollar 426 million in 2005 and are poised to cross the half billion-dollar mark in 2006.
