| PDD blows trumpet now ! | | In an attempt to recover tariff arrears, chalks out a novel idea | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 26 The Power Development Department (PDD) has embarked on a novel strategy for motivating consumers to clear their power tarrif. PDD employees on a mike fitted van have started bleating one warning to the power consumers “clear your arrears failing which electricity supply would be snapped.” “Deposit your tariff. Any delay would result in snapping power supply to your houses.” This is the crisp warning to power consumers. For the last several days the PDD vans are seen moving from one locality to the other in the Jammu city dishing out warning to consumers. The power Minister, Babu Singh, said here today “we have resorted to this novel method for motivating people to clear their power dues.” He said the PDD officials convey to the consumers that if they do not clear their arrears on time the power supply would be snapped without any notice. In reply to a question, he said the Government had to resort to this practice because “we have to complete the revenue report by March 25.”He said that metering system introduced along with frequent inspections, computerized billing and improved collection efficiency had increased the average per unit revenue realization to 67 per cent. He said still there was a wide gap between the recovery and the target. PDD officials said against the target of Rs.711.64 crores fixed in 2006-2007 Rs.395 crores were received as power tariff. During the first nine months of the current Rs.381 crores were recovered against the target of over Rs.700 crores. The PDD has launched a stiff drive against those industrialists who continue to be defaulters in payment of power dues. They have been warned that if they failed to clear their arrears by the middle of next month the electricity supply will be snapped. They have been threatened that in case the gap in the power revenue realization widened from the industrial sector the power realization and metering would be handed over to the private sector. |
