| Jammu gets Lalu express in populist railway budget | | | New Delhi | Feb 26 Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today proposed cut in second class and AC fares, following the trend he set in the last four years. Presenting the Railway Budget for 2008-09, Prasad announced that AC tier I fares would be reduced by 7 per cent, while that of AC tier II would go down by 4 per cent in the lean season. The Railway Minister, in many new initiative also announced a new train to Jammu. Further, he said a one rupee discount would be given on non-suburban second class ordinary fares of up to Rs 50 and 5 per cent across the board in non-suburban second class fares above Rs 50. "We have done the magic generating a surplus of Rs 25,000 crore despite reduction in fares. Bowing to the hopes of and expectations of millions of people, I have decided to reduce passenger fares and freight rates this year also," Prasad said. In the last four years the Railways had reduced second class fares by one rupee for suburban passenger services, Rs 2 for second class non-suburban passenger services. There was also reduction of 20 per cent in surcharge levied on second class super fast mail/express train, up to 24 per cent in fares for AC first class and up to 14 per cent in fares for AC 2-tier. The minister also said discounts available under variable fare scheme for newly-designed higher capacity coaches would also be increased. Discounts on sleeper class during both peak and lean season would be increased to 6 per cent from the current 4 per cent. Discounts for AC III (popular) would be increased to 5 per cent from 4 per cent, while that of AC III tier would be increased to 5 per cent from 4 per cent in busy season and to 10 per cent from 8 per cent in the lean season. |
