Ball Badminton: Srinagar retains men, women titles

Proving that they have the better stuff, the district Srinagar teams today retained State Ball Badminton titles in both men and women sections at Green Field ground, here today. Organized by J&K Ball Badminton Association, the championship was sponsored by the J&K State Sports Council.
In the men’s final, Srinagar beat Jammu district (2-1) in a well contested match. Down by one set 23-29, Jammu fought back to win the second 29-17 but only to lose again in the third and deciding set 29-20. The score: 29-23, 17-29, 29-20.
District Srinagar also retained the girls’ trophy beating Baramulla in straight easy sets. The score: 29-13, 29-5. The finals were officiated by Riyaz Ahmed Khan, Ball Badminton Instructor of the J&K State Sports Council.
District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Jai Raj was chief guest in the final and valedictory function, who gave away winners trophy and other individual prizes.
Speaking to the players, the chief guest said, “I liked the game because it help in developing patience of playing controlled shots and skills to build up mutual understanding among the five-men involved in covering the court with badminton like rackets in hands.”
On the request of the Association to introduce the game at the school level, the District Officer said, “Submit a detailed proposal with the Department so that it is discussed at the high level before making Ball Badminton part of the annual calendar of activities.”
Earlier, treasurer of the Association, G S Bakshi presented a brief note of the activities to the chief guest and other distinguished gathering. He also informed that the manager Green Field has assured all possible help for setting-up a permanent centre of the game so as to popularize the game in Jammu.
Prominent among those present were Manager Green Field, Anil Shukla, Raj Kumar, PEM, Tilak Raj Sharma, PEM and incharge grounds, senior groundman, Pashori Lal.
