| Snow not a deterrent for infiltrators | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 28 Snow-bound routes in Jammu and Kashmir usually meant check on infiltrators for the Army. But now with weapons recovered from militants in Poonch, it is a sign that even snow is not a deterrent for militants trying to sneak in. This means that jawans need to be vigilant throughout the year. Winter in Jammu and Kashmir usually means bad news of shortage of basic amenities and blocked highways. But for the Army it was breather as heavy snow kept infiltration at bay. S D Goswami, Defence Spokesman said, ''In south of Pir Panchal though infiltration can take place throughout the year, it normally picks up in the winter months, that's mainly through Poonch Rajouri and Mendhar sector as the routes in the Kashmir valley are closed because of snow.'' The infiltration attempts have considerably lowered in the last few years, but it has not stopped completely and the Army personnel guarding the LoC cannot afford to relax. In the past month there have been a dozen infiltration attempts in the Poonch sector. Nine militants have been killed. At a forward post in Poonch, the snow is knee deep and at some places more than 10 feet deep. But the jawans can't afford to drop their guard even for a second. Major C P S Soemwal said, ''When there is snow we have to be even more vigilant to stop infiltration and we are alert and ready to stop any infiltration bid.'' |
