| JU scholar selected for prestigious Rothschild Internship at Cambridge | | Rashid, first Asian Researcher, to get this highly acclaimed honour | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 29 Jammu University scholar belonging to Gujjar community, a major tribal and nomadic community of Jammu and Kashmir state, has been selected by the University of Cambridge for the prestigious Rothschild Internship and Students Conference on Conservation Science (SCCS) -2008. Abdul Rashid Choudhary son of Allah Din Choudhary of Panihad Budhal, a far flung area of border Rajouri district, is one of the 12 best researchers across the globe and the first Asian Researcher to have been awarded the Rothschild Internship. Rashid is the first student from any Asian University and also the first from an Indian University, Organization and the Institution to get selected for this highly acclaimed Annual Honour of 800- year old University of Cambridge. After participating in the SCCS- 2008 at Cambridge, Rashid would be working at the Royal Botanic Garden Kew, London to complete his project on the threatened flora of North- Western Himalayas. Out of 2000 young researchers from 113 countries, 1340 applicants were assessed and only 190 were invited for the SCCS-2008. 12 Of these, 12 best researchers across the globe, including Abdul Rashid, were awarded the Rothschild Internship, which is going to be held at Cambridge from March 23 to mid May 2008. The selected candidates would be entitled to and fro travel, stay, stipend and access to the world class scientific facilities in the top five UK based research and academic organizations. The selection of Rashid for this prestigious Rothschild Internship is a matter of pride not only for University of Jammu but for the entire Gujjar community and the State of Jammu and Kashmir as a whole. His selection for this highly acclaimed internship must serve as a symbol of inspiration for the youth of the state and the country to go ahead for attaining higher studies. Rashid a recipient of Young Scientist Award is the only Field Biology Consultant of the Conservation International for the entire North-Western Himalaya and is currently doing research under the supervision of Prof V K Anand, Dean Life Science University of Jammu. |
