2/29/2008 11:33:05 PM
New Delhi | Feb 29
A 14-year-old boy was injured after being hit by a jeep of a former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir, near the Prime Minister’s house in Chanakyapuri on Thursday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Anshi, was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital by the Gypsy driver. The boy, who sells groundnuts by the roadside, has fractured both his legs.
The police was informed by a passerby, but no case has been registered by the victim's family. The boy was crossing the road opposite Air Force station when the accident took place. Said Anshi: "I was crossing the road when a speeding Gypsy hit me. I fell on the road and both my legs got fractured." He also has injury marks on his face.
An eyewitness said: "I was going towards Patiala House when a Gypsy suddenly overtook my autorickshaw and then hit a boy. I later informed the police and the boy was taken to RML Hospital."
The Gypsy, currently deployed in the service of a former J-K chief minister, is owned by the National Security Guard (NSG). Four NSG commandos were sitting inside the vehicle when the accident took place, said the police.
The driver, Deepak Kumar, denied that he was speeding. Kumar said the boy suddenly came in front of his vehicle while sprinting across the road and he applied the brakes immediately. "I myself took the child to the hospital and have given my contact number and other details to the cops. They can call me whenever they feel I am required for investigations," added Kumar.
Anshi's brother, Pappu Yadav, who lives in Kotla Mubarakpur, said he has not filed any complaint. "I don’t know how the accident took place and so I have not complained to the police. They also told me that nothing can be done in the case as the vehicle belonged to one of the ministers," he claimed.
