| SRTC employees want one time settlement, Govt on back foot | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 1 Over 4000 striking employees of the debt ridden State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) on Saturday decided not to draw their salaries, pending for last five months. The State Government too has failed to transfer the promised amount in their accounts. Meanwhile, the crucial round of talks held in Srinagar also failed and employee leaders threatened to further intensify their 12- day long agitation demanding one time settlement. The state government, as promised, earlier, maintained that they had released their salaries pending for last five months but the employees’ leaders till Saturday evening claimed that the salaries were not transferred. “This government is playing with our sentiments and wants to break our unity by making false announcements. We will now refuse to draw salaries and put pressure on the state government to come clear on its policy about the future of SRTC. The crucial round of talks held today between SRTC employees and senior SRTC officials in Srinagar failed to break the impasse. Shakeel Ahmed Kochey said the state government is adamant on its stand and not showing any flexibility in addressing the issue. “We are clear on our stand and want our due share. We will not call off our strike and the same will continue till the government comes out with a clear cut agenda on how it will deal with the situation in the coming months. Meanwhile in Jammu, leaders of the SRTC workers union said “We are not interested in carrying home salaries of five months. We want the state government should settle the issue once for all. If it wants it can close down the Corporation and clear our accounts so that we can start afresh. “We cannot afford to go on strike every time and our salaries are blocked due to fund crunch”, spokesman of the J&K SRTC workers union, Pawan Sharma said. Other leaders including Ashok Mehra and Paramjeet Singh spearheading the strike in Jammu told media men on Saturday, that MD SRTC had personally come to announce that salaries have been transferred in to the employees accounts and they can rejoin their duties by calling off their stir. The employees gathered near Bikram Chowk and maintained that till the state government takes a final decision about their fate they will continue to remain on strike and would not join their duties. It may be mentioned that the SRTC has sought fresh loan of Rs.17.5 crore from Jammu and Kashmir Bank for releasing the pending salaries of its employees. |
