New Hindi play ‘Jonk’-the Leech, written by one of the most celebrated playwright of Hindi literature Upender Nath ‘Ashak’ and directed by Sumeet Sharma was staged in Natrang’s weekly theatre series Sunday Theatre at Natrang’s Studio here today.
In his introductory remarks, Natrang Director Balwant Thakur said that Natrang, as an institution, has been blessed to have highly enthusiastic and creative qualified young directors and Sumit Sharma is one of them. Sharma is credited to have directed few outstanding theatre works.
The play ‘Jonk’ is based on the story of an intruder who disturbs the life and the quality time of a newly wedded Professor. Seeing their petty state, a friend of theirs plans a theatrical act for them to oust this unwanted guest and advised them to leave the house pretending to go to in- laws place at another city. While they are planning all this, the unwanted guest enters. Despite enacting the planned drama, the sticky man is not ready to move out of their place and on the contrary takes charge of their kitchen and treats them with delicious dishes. Finally, the Professor declared to leave for a distant place and the unwanted guest takes the lead and carries the baggage of the Professor to his next destination.
A traditional comedy set in one act style was a big challenge for the actors to maintain its pace. But young actors demonstrated their maturity and gave excellent performances. Mohit Sharma, as young Professor and Kamakshi Pattyal, were successful in portraying their agony and frustration created by an intruder in their life. Pankush Verma, as the helping friend, was equally good in his role. Rohit Sharma, hero of the show’ Jonk’ stole the show with his praise worthy histrionics. Others, who acted in the Play included Ankush Lakhnotra, Rajesh Mehta and Inderpal Singh, while the lights were designed by Gaurav Jamwal and executed by Rahul Singh.
