Despite all their public display of bravado and self-confidence, things look pretty confusing for Jammu and Kashmir's main political formations. The key coalition partner Peoples Democratic Party is likely to give up its earlier idea of entering into a pre-poll alliance with Congress for the upcoming assembly polls, this year.
If well informed sources in the party circles have to be believed majority of Kashmir based party leaders are of the idea that PDP will be at the receiving end in case it enters into a pre-poll alliance with Congress. This concern has given rise to another idea; `Tactical Alliance' in the assembly polls to be held in the state at the end of this year.
Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that party leadership in consultation with top Congressmen in New Delhi have been busy with different calculus of state-wise and party-wise tallies to produce a winning formula.
The PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed was advocating hard for a pre-poll alliance with Congress and he also got a shot in arm when Congress Working Committee in its resolution endorsed the continuance of the alliance in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Though the Congress leadership in the state has been continuously opposing the idea of any alliance with the PDP for upcoming polls, sources said that Sayeed received a green signal from the 10 Janpath in this regard.
However, looking forward at gaining good number of seats in Valley, PDP think tanks have started opposing the idea of any pre-poll alliance. "Majority of the leadership in the party now believes that in case party enters into alliance for elections, the oppositional National Conference will be benefited in some parts of Valley", a senior party leader told News Agency of Kashmir, on the condition of anonymity.
He said that the keeping in view the recent by-polls in some assembly segments in Valley it was communicated to the party leadership that in case Congress do not field its candidate against PDP, the opposition NC is likely to cash-in the Congress vote bank. "We have the recent example when despite alliance Congress senior leaders came in open against the PDP candidates in Pattan, Rafiabad and Baramulla assembly segments".
If all goes as it seems ruling coalition may go for `Tactical Alliance', sources said. "The party leadership has been suggested that instead of going for pre-poll alliance the two parties should have friendly contest in the segments, where both parties have strong vote bank".

"The new strategy, if works, will be useful for both the parties", source said added, "Fielding week candidate against the alliance candidate is likely to be one of the strategy in the new `tactical alliance'".
The bottom line remains, however, that National Conference will have to fight a tough battle in the upcoming polls against the coalition alliance, whether they go to poll separately or together.
