| VC for realizing the importance of women in decision making | | 6-day workshop on capacity building for women managers | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 3 The 6-day UGC sponsored workshop on capacity building of women managers in higher education organized by the Centre for Women Studies, University of Jammu began here today. Forty participants from Northern States of HP, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, UP, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir are attending the workshop. Minister for Education G S Charak was the chief guest house while Padamshree Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, VC University of Jammu presided over the function. Speaking on the occasion Charak congratulated Prof Mattoo for providing dynamic leadership to the University. He said that women academicians are under represented in the higher education system and with the increasing complexity of management of higher education; the proper leadership training to women managers has become essential. He complimented the Centre for Women’s Studies for organizing this type of workshop which would lead to more capacity building of women in higher education system. In his presidential address Prof Mattoo said that the importance of women in decision making need to be realized and some visionary and systematic changes are required in this direction. Such workshops, he said, can go a long way in making women’s presence felt at the administrative positions in higher education. Prof Susheela Kaushik, Core group resource person and member National Consultative Committee, UGC, in her key note address laid emphasis on evolving solutions to the problems of gender imbalance in the decision making positions in the University system. She said the UGC is trying to ensure gender sensitivity in governance and administration of the University system. Prof Reicha Tanwar Regional Coordinator, Director Centre for Women’s Studies University of Khrushetra gave an overview of the scheme. In her welcome address, Prof Poonam Dhawan Director Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, while giving the objectives of the workshop said that the trainers workshop is exclusively for the group who have attended the foundation program of capacity building adding that the objective of the program is to develop a critical mass of trainers so that all the Universities and colleges could be reached out for further capacity building of their women managers. |
