| NC ready with partial list of aspirants | | BATTLE-2008 | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 3 Adopting caution at all fronts to avoid any disaster like the one party suffered in 2002, the National Conference is meticulously preparing for the forthcoming elections with a multi-pronged strategy at different levels. Many senior leaders who called the shots in decades of 1980s and 90s and later relegated to isolation by Omar Abdullah, have been brought back a forefront of schemes and their experiences are being utilized for the future poll strategy. The father-son duo of Farooq and Omar Abdullah too reported to have put the things at an even keel and assignments have been divided between the two so as to lead a united campaign and leave no room for any confusion for lobbyism. Even though the Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress are keenly watching the developments within rival camp but the National Conference seems to have prepared for a serious battle ahead. Reliable sources told EARLY TIMES that the party shortlisted the probable candidates for the forthcoming elections and efforts were on to release a first of candidates. “An early decision about the candidature leaves little room for confusion. It gives amply time to the contestant to prepare his grounds and gives party opportunity to learn the level of support or opposition in any constituency”, said a National Conference leader. Sources claimed that Farooq and Omar, in consultation with senior party leaders and organizational office bearers have reportedly finalized names of some 30 to 35 candidates for assembly elections. They said that more selections have been made from Jammu province where the party has already decided on the candidature of over 22 aspirants. “Though the list of candidates has not been formally announced but the contestants have been told by the party leadership to rush to their constituencies and prepare for the elections”, said the sources. Sources further informed that in some constituencies where there are more than one or two potential contenders, the party is weighing down the options and will not take too long to make a final decision. It is an internal feeling and also a sort of decision that the party will utilize following few weeks to finalise all candidates for Jammu province and draw out the comprehensive poll strategy before moving to Kashmir region. The extended mass contact program of the NC President Omar Abdullah is also in this direction that he wants to complete first phase of campaigning in Jammu region before initiating the movement in Kashmir Valley. |
