| Punjab & Sindh Bank pips PP to retain Martyrs’ Memorial trophy | | Dalbir, Ravinder, Vikramjeet of PSB bag individual prizes | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 5 Routing the Punjab cops in red, the technically well-equipped side of Punjab and Sindh Bank today retained the running trophy making it a 3-2 victory in the final of 3rd All India Martyrs’ Memorial Hockey Tournament which was organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Police at K K Hakhu Stadium, here. Under the guidance of Olympian, Baljit Singh, Punjab and Sindh Bank dominated the field improving their first half lead of two goals to 3-0 in the 39th minute. However, the fighting spirit of Punjab Police finally yielded results but only to reduce the margin. The two goals scored in the last 10 minutes of the game came as succor for the desperate supporters of the Punjab Police, who remained a dejected lot in the first 60 minutes of the final. Credit for Punjab and Sindh Bank’s outstanding performance in the final also goes to the goal-keeper, Teja Singh, who made brilliant saves, especially after the breather. For their superb play through out the five-day long Grade-A tournament of the Hockey Fedeation of India (HFI), all the three important individual prizes went in favour of Punjab and Sindh Bank. While Dalair Singh bagged the man of the match trophy, Ravinder Singh emerged as highest scorer. The coveted trophy of the best player of the tournament was bagged by Vikramjit Singh. Earlier, Bikramjit Singh opened the account for PSB in the 24th minute through a penalty corner, followed by second goal in the very next move by Dalaik Singh. The third goal for PSB came through Rajwinder Singh, who sounded the board in the 39th minute. From Punjab Police, International player, Jugraj Singh scored the first goal in the 62nd minute converting a penalty corner while second goal came through Amit Singh in the 68th minute. In the final and valedictory function, Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad was chief guest who gave away winners and runners-up trophies besides other individual trophies. He was all praise for the organizers, J&K Police for making the event of national repute a regular feature. The tournament which was inaugurated by the Governor, Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha on March Ist was declared closed by the Chief Minister. Later, Inspector General of Police (Armed) S Owais presented vote of thanks. |
