| 70 lakh gallons being added to supply system in June | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 6 Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today inspected the ongoing work on Rs. 35.26 crore Unit III of the Sitlee Water Plant near here and was told that the crucial project would be completed by June this year as per schedule. The Unit would add another 70 lakh gallons of water per day to the supply system in Jammu city and ease the water scarcity problem in the winter capital. The Chief Minister, accompanied by Advisor to CM, Janak Raj Gupta, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sudhanshu Pandey and a group of media persons, said that Jammu city was faced with acute shortage of drinking water due to increased load following the migration of large number of people from Kashmir and other parts of the State here in the wake of militancy. He said the situation was further compounded by the washing away of Unit II of the Sitlee plant by floods. He said the 70 lakh gallons per day Rs. 6.54 crores Unit II was reconstructed and inaugurated by him last month, bringing the water supply in the city to the pre-September 2006 position when floods destroyed the plant. He said the ongoing Unit III would bring the situation to pre-1990 position. Mr. Azad said that instructions had been issued for installing three more units at Sitlee within next two to three years for further augmenting water supply. A project had been formulated for this purpose. He said keeping in view the increasing population of the city and peripheral areas, a comprehensive water supply was required to be formulated and implemented by taking short, medium and long-term measures. He said he was working on providing 24 hour water supply to the people in Jammu city. Chief Engineer, PHE, Jammu, Vinod Goswami and senior officers were present on the occasion. |
