| Cocoon price increases all time high of Rs.400 | | Zargar for adopting cocoon rearing as subsidiary source of income. | | Srinagar, August 26 The cocoon price in the open auction market has touched an all time high of Rs.400 per kg. The price boom is highest price since cocoon rearing was introduced in the State 200 years ago. Moreover, the farmers of the state are expected to get more than Rs.7.68 crore income this year as compared to Rs.5.32 crore last year as a result of improvement in quality of cocoons, which is more than 85% to 90% of “A” grade quality of the total production, harvested during the current year,. This was stated at a meeting held here today to take stock of the progress on ongoing auction of cocoons in various open auction markets in the state. The Minister for Agriculture and co-operatives, Mr. Aziz Zargar presided. The Director, Sericulture, Mr. Mohd. Ashraf Khan was also present. It was stated that marketing of cocoons has been completed in Jammu Division and it is in full swing in Kashmir Division at Srinagar. The average cocoon price in most of the cocoon markets has been registered between Rs.250 to Rs.300 per kilogramme during to current year which is almost Rs.50 to Rs.80 per kilogramme than the price received during last year. Director, Sericulture informed e more than 8 lakh kgs. of cocoon production is expected during the current year financial as against Rs.7.62 lakh kgs. last year. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister called for familiarizing cocoon rearing among the farmers which is a best subsidiary source of income. He said cocoon rearing activity requires only one month for one complete cycle and can be adopted easily even by women folk to supplement family income. He called for collective efforts to promote traditional Silk Industry adding that concerned officers and Agriculture Scientists should introduce latest silk worm races to withstand stiff market competition in the open market. |
