| Twenty-20 Cricket: Press Club stuns Simula Sports to enter final | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 7 Led by experienced Ashwani Gupta, the Press Club XI today snatched the victory from the jaws of hosts Simula Sports Club beating latter by nine runs in the semi-finals of the 2nd Anandrathi Corporate Twenty-20 Cricket Tournament underway at University of Jammu ground, here. Now, Press Club XI will be playing against equally good side of J P World XI in the title clash on March nine at the same venue. The winner of the tournament will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs one lakh while the runners-up to get Rs 50,000. Simula Sports Club lost the match despite a brilliant knock of 83 (off 50 balls, 2x6, 12x4) runs from Rohit Mattoo. Proceeding confidently towards the 167 runs target, Simula got puzzled that too when the goal was well in their reach. From a winning position of 110 for two at the end of 15 overs, Simula lost a couple of quick wickets in an attempt to accelerate their run rate. The wrong selection of shots by the batsmen at the crease cooped with poor selection in batting order was all what went in favour of Press Club XI. Needing 25 runs in the last three overs, Simula lost two batsmen while taking risky singles resulting into only two runs came in 18th over. With five wickets in hand and 14 runs needed in the last over, Simula lost another wicket (caught and bowled) to Vijay Dogra, followed by a stump-out thus lost the match by nine runs. “I’m not dejected with today’s defeat rather we as a host are happy that we have succeed in our attempt to entertain the Jammuities. I must say, this is why cricket is the most loved game. Anyway, Press Club played well today and won the match,” said skipper of Simula Sports Club, Hilal Rather at the end of the match. Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, Press Club XI made 166 runs for the loss of eight wickets with young Vimarsh Kaw (54 off 48 balls, 8x4) being the top scorer. Pardeep Bali made 25-ball 39 runs while Amit and Karan Dogra contributed 14 runs each. From Simula Sports, Anoop and Ram Dayal shared two wickets each while Vijay Sharma and Sameer Khajuria took one each. “I congratulates the boys, who have played nice cricket today and hopefully we will be playing the same game against J P World in the final on Sunday,” said Press Club skipper, Ashwani Gupta. For his brilliant knock of 83 runs, Rohit Mattoo was declared man of the match. He was presented a LG DVD by the Assistant Director Academic Staff College of the JU, Ranjit Kalra. Meanwhile, in the second semi-final, J P World XI trounced the Jammu and Kashmir Police XI by 13 runs. Batting first, J P World set a target of 145 runs for the loss of six wickets, which, in reply, J&K Police could not chase and in the process exhausted their quota of 20 overs for 132 runs losing eight wickets. Guru Partap and Pranav Mahajan were highest scorers from J P World with 48 and 30 runs respectively while Irshad and Munish contributed 22 and 21 runs respectively. Naresh claimed three wickets from J&K Police. Later, chasing a run-rate of over seven runs per over, J&K Police could make only 132 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Riyaz remained the top scorer with 31 runs while Shashi and Rajesh Gill added 20 and 19 runs respectively. Guru Partap bagged three wickets, followed by Irshad, who took two from J P World. Guru Partap was adjudged man of the match for his all round performance. |
