| LeT militants now recruiting women | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 8 In a bid to revive militancy in Jammu and Kashmir jehadis belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba, have started using women to transport arms and ammunition. By doing so, the militant organisation presumably hope to exploit the mindset even among police, that women are unlikely to support terror. But behind the innocent faces lies a grim truth - that women are indeed on the rolls of militant outfits, transporting arms and ammunition. Rubina and Rafiqa Begum are two such women now in the police net. Recently, Doda Police who intercepted a Tata Sumo in which these women were travelling, were caught totally off guard. Seeing the women with infants in their arms, the policemen were about to let them pass. However, on closer inspection of the vehicle, what they found was a hidden cache of AK 47s and bullets. To checkmate security agencies these women had clandestinely kept the magazines of the rifles hidden inside their clothing. Police claim the consignment of weapons was meant to carry out some bigger activity in the area. "In this case these ladies were carrying weapons all the way from Sopore by concealing them in her clothes. So definitely the involvement of women to some extent is there. It was rare earlier but over a period of time they (militants) are involving the women folk also," commented Manohar Singh, SP of Doda. The duo had allgedly brought these AK rifles from Sopore in North Kashmir and were taking them to a Lashkar hideout. Interrogation revealed that this was not the first time - in the past, they had carried hawala money for a Lashkar divisional commander operating in the Doda heights. These are not isolated cases. Over the past few months, security forces have arrested more than eight women linked to militancy in the Kashmir valley. A few months back 18-year-old Nahida, a student of Dogra Law College was arrested by the Jammu Police while delivering an arms consignment to a Lashkar cell. Similarly, the arrest of Haseena Begum shocked the nation; Begum was a part of a Lashkar-e-Toiba module planning to assassinate J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during a public rally in Ramban district. It has learnt that there are intelligence inputs of more women being recruited by militant outfits to help them with their logistics - a revelation that has security forces worried. By roping these women, militants are trying to once again spread tentacles in areas where security agencies continue to dominate the scene. If this evil is not nipped now, there is every possibility that the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be bogged down with yet another threat which will be hard to tackle.
