US secretary of state, Pompeo may reset Pak-US ties
9/6/2018 10:05:34 PM
Scared by Pakistan warming up to Russia and China the United States plans to reset the ties with Islamabad which have nose dived since the American announcement of cut of 300 million dollars in military aid. And it depends on the new Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan to reciprocate the way Washington seems interested in promoting cordial ties with Pakistan. Imran Khan has not to lift a heavy burden on his broad shoulders. He has to seek cooperation from the Army to tackle terrorists who are sent to Afghanistan and India. In fact Washington wants Islamabad to initiate action against the Haqqani group of terrorists and Lashkar-i-Toiba. This has been a long standing demand of Washington but the successive Governments in Islamabad ignored this demand to the dismay of the United States. The US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo hopes to "reset relations" with Pakistan and find common ground with the Imran Khan-led new government.
Pompeo, who will hold discussions in Islamabad shortly, enroute to Delhi, with his counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi and meet Pak Army Chief General Bajwa as well as PM Khan, made these remarks to the accompanying press pool. Imran Khan has accepted that lots of challenges are ahead of his Government and these challenges may not be allowed to affect the old ties between the US and Pakistan. Pakistan has one worry it may face a new India in case the US-India ties touched new high. And so far Donald Trump is quite happy with the cooperation from India in the war against terror. Washington realizes that India has to play a larger role in the region for the establishment of peace and that is possible if it is not being faced with problem posed by Pakistan.
Pakistan also realizes that close ties between the India and the US could jolt Pakistan and that is the reason for Imran Khan to promote cordial ties with India so that New Delhi does not secure sufficient military aid from the US which may pose a fresh security problem for Pakistan. That is the basic reason for Pakistan to reset its ties with the US so that it has not to go with a begging bowl to Russia and China. Imran Khan knows it well that neither China nor Russia can compensate for the major cut imposed by the US and that is the reason for securing strong ties with Washington so that the US does not befriend India at the cost of peace in Pakistan. Possibilities are bright that Pakistan may initiate action against terrorists who are active in Afghanistan and in Jammu and Kashmir for the purpose of peace in Pakistan. It is hoped that Imran Khan may accept Pompeo's peace process.
