| Nighat Shahfi Pandit conferred 'Stree Shakti Puruskar' | | | New Delhi | Mar 9 Nighat Shahfi Pandit from militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir has been awarded with the 'Stree Shakti Puruskar' for her pioneering work in the field of development and empowerment of women. The 57-year-old Pandit was presented with award, instituted by Ministry of Women and Child Development, on Saturday by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on the occasion of International Women's Day. Nighat, Chairperson of Human Effort for Love and Peace (HELP) foundation in Jammu and Kashmir and an acclaimed activist, was chosen for the award for being at the forefront of sensitising the community to overall development of children and empowerment of women. Last year, Nighat was shortlisted for the Nobel Peace Prize for working in violence-hit areas.Her work also includes rehabilitation of orphans and widows in the Kashmir Valley. The award was also given to 15 other women from across the country. |
