| Korfball: Jammu defends State title | | Farooq presents Rs 20,000 cheque to Manjit Singh | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 9 District Jammu defended the State Korfball championship trophy beating Pulwama district 19-7 (13-1) in the final of the sixth edition of the State meet which was organized by the J&K Korfball Association at Green Field ground, here today. An improved side of Pulwama could not succeed in their attempts on the basket though they played nicely in the 35-minute first half. However, in the second half, Gulzar Ahmed hardly missed any opportunity came his way and scored highest five goals reducing the margin to 19-7. From Jammu district, Amit Sharma was top scorer with four while Tarandeep Singh and Riya contributed three goals each. Karandeep and Meenakshi added two goals each. In the hard-liner, district Baramulla defeated Poonch 3-1 to take home the trophy for the third place. Earlier, in the semi-finals, Jammu beat Poonch 15-5 while Pulwama outplayed Baramulla 6-4 in a close contest. In the final and prize distribution function, president J&K Korfball Association, T S Wazir was chief guest who gave away winners and runners-up trophies besides medals to the third position holders and certificates. Speaking to the visiting teams from Srinagar and Jammu, Wazir complimented the Pulwama team for their improved performance. Earlier, during the semi-finals, played in the morning session, former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah paid a visit to the venue and witnessed the matches. Member Parliament, who remained there for over 30 minutes, congratulated the office bearers of the Korfball Association for introducing the game at far off districts of Shopian and Ganderbal in Kashmir. While complimenting the players for their achievements at the national level, Dr Abdullah presented a cheque of Rs 20,000 to Manjit Singh, who represented Indian in the World Korfball Championship. Farooq also offered over 100 participants from Kashmir a movie in a city theatre from his side as a goodwill gesture. |
