| Mobilize public opinion about social evils through theatre: Baig | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 10 Underlining the need for good theatre in portraying the evils prevalent in the society and highlighting the bad impact of these, Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig yesterday said that theatre acts should be a mirror of society depicting various dogmas, evils and other related issues and creating a mass awareness to take measures do away with them. The Deputy Chief Minister was addressing a gathering of intellectuals, play wrights and artists after inaugurating a week-long theatre festival of young directors “Rang Pratibha” organized by Sangeet Natak Academy in association with the Academy of Art, Culture and Languages at Abhinav Theatre yesterday. Appealing the people to shed away the prejudices Mr. Baig said “we should work collectively for the betterment of our society and nation as a whole and synergize our intellectual capabilities for the same”. Quoting a Shakespearean verse, the Deputy Chief Minister said “theatre teaches us the concept of life where everybody is a player and destiny has cut a role for everybody and we should not get carried away by our materialistic pursuits. We should concentrate on attaining the real meaning of life”, he added. While praising the role of Cultural Academy in providing a forum for young actors and directors to display their creative talents, Mr. Baig said that the role of Cultural Academy was very important in organizing these types of innovative festivals at a regular interval. “By organizing these types of events creative energy of the younger generation is properly channelized” he said. The multilingual festival showcases Kashmiri, Hindi plays of ten young directors of the state of Jammu and Kashmir chosen by an expert committee from the state. Apart from the stage performance, there would be interactions with theatre experts and observers who are invited both within the state as well as from the other parts of the country. “Comedy of terror” was screened as an inaugural play of the festival. The inaugural function was attended by the Minister of State for Tourism Mr. G. A. Saroori, MLC Murtaza Khan, Secretary Cultural Academy Dr. Rafeeq Masoodi and a galaxy of intellectuals and writers. |
