| NC to enact special laws for women: Farooq | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 10 Patron National conference and former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah today said that his party, if voted to power, will bring special legislations to deal with the increasing crime against women in the society. Addressing women convention of the party on the eve of International Women's Day, here today, Dr Farooq said that crime against women has increased many folds in the country and Jammu and Kashmir has also witness steep increase in the menace. "Special legislations are required to deal with the menace", he said while assuring that his party, if voted to power will focus on the problem and laws will be enacted to empower the law enforcing agencies to meet the challenge. Further assuring that party's election manifesto will also have special focus on problems confronting women in the society, Dr Abdullah said that the situation was alarming and it was a dire need of the hour that greater social awareness be created among the people against harassment of women. "Women who act as mother and play main role in development of society needed to be protected from cruelty and torture", he said and added that under all religions and belief women has special status but the gender is being subjected to inhuman acts by the male dominated society. He said inspite of encouraging women she is subjected to harassment and torture one way or the other. "The usage of modern technology like USG were meant for carrying various tests but unfortunately we use the machine for sex determination, which is punishable under law" he added. Referring to Education of women, Dr Abdullah said that a lot is yet to be done in this field and to educate woman. "The special packages for women by National Conference will also include opening of evening schools on the pattern of adult education, where these women can learn and can spend at least two hours a day" Referring to reservation for women in parliament and state assemble, Dr Abdullah said that he has already pleaded the case in parliament and attended one of the meeting relating to women reservation. He said that the women will participate in coming polls and will contest elections both assemble and Panchayat. "I really wish that women candidates will prepare themselves and take active part in forthcoming elections both Panchayat and assemble". He asked the women workers pf the party to be ready for elections and advised them to strengthen the party at gross root level. He said that widow and old age pension should be streamlined and deserved people should be benefited by the scheme. He said that still hundreds of widows are without pension which needed to be given special attention. The former CM said that if his party will come to power; it will keep a provision for free medicare facility for old age women, especially widows. |
