Mir gets support from ANC, Shoaib Lone for third front

Number of political groups and leaders have had session with the ousted PDP leader and MLA,Ghulam Hassan Mir, who was expelled from the primary membership of the party on charge of anti-party activities yesterday. The Awami National Conference, led by G.M.Shah, a former Chief Minister, Shoaib Lone, an independent MLA, and several former ministers and legislators, including Sonnaullah Dar, a former Industries Minister, are said to have extended their support to Ghulam Hassan Mir,member of the State Assembly, who was expelled from the basic membership of the PDP yesterday,in his bid for the formation of a third front in Jammu and Kashmir.
Even before his expulsion from the PDP GH Mir had a number of sessions with Shoaib Lone,Muzaffar Shah, son of G.M.Shah,and other political leaders. As per the political grapevine Ghulam Hassan Mir in particular and the third front in general are likely to get outside support of the National Conference so that it was able to avenge its defeat in 2002 poll. The National Conference leadership treats the PDP as its main political foe in the Kashmir valley which has 46 Assembly seats and by lending secret support to Mir and his third front the National Conference could succeed in preventing the PDP from repeating the 2002 poll performance when it won 17 seats from the Kashmir valley.
Mir has one regret. He said he was not given any notice so that he could explain his position. He still considers himself a leader belonging to the PDP.He says "I have been a founder member of the PDP and I shall continue to make it a peoples party."However,General secretary PDP,Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said "there was no need for calling an explanation from Mir before his expulsion because during the last couple of weeks he had made repeated statements against the party leadership. He also had announced his plan for forming the third front. In order to disallow him further chance for maligning the PDP and its leadership we had no other alternative but to expel him from the party."
In fact Mir had lost confidence of Mufti Mohd.Sayeed after the former raked up political hand in the killing of Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone,Minister of State for Education and father of Shoaib Lone. Lone had been killed by militants in 2005.Mir had vaguely held the Mufti responsible for the killing of Dr Lone.It was Mir who had encouraged Shoaib Lone to raise the issue of his father's killing in the Assembly which had forced the Chief Minister to refer the case to the CBI for a probe.Another development that widened the distance between the Mufti and Mir was the latter's support to Shoaib Lone who won the byelection from Sangrama in 2006 defeating the PDP candidate.Mir had also been instrumental in defeating PDP candidate,Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, from Pattan constituency which helped the NC candidate,Dr Mustafa Kamal, brother of Dr Farooq Abdullah,to win the seat. These developments had forced Mufti Sayeed not to recommend Mir's name for a cabinet post when Ghulam Nabi Azad tookover as Chief Minister from the Mufti in 2005.
The CPIM leader,M.Y.Tarigami,who has been in the forefront of those trying to form the third front, seemed to be a happy man. When contacted he said "after Mir's expulsion from the PDP the third front will become a reality soon."He said that he would meet Mir shortly to give a definite shape to the front.
Whether as a member of the third front or as an expelled PDP leader Ghulam Hassan Mir has already chalked out a plan of rocking the PDP boat. The PDP dissidents plan to go to the people with a three-point programme. They would rake up the issue of Dr Lone's killing, the problem of unemployment, dynastic and dictatorial rule of the PDP.When asked to comment on the reports of Mir receiving support from all anti-PDP elements Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said that "yes there are chances that those who fail to get the PDP tickets for the next election may join the Mir camp but none would be able to dent the PDP base."Bhat said "even if the Awami National Conference joins the third front it will have no impact on the PDP because the Awami National Conference is a spent up force."He said "the National Conference leadership is already scared of its future and its attempt at weakening the PDP base in the state is unlikely to materialise."
