| Campus sizzles as JUTA goes to polls today | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 10 ET Special Otherwise cooling amidst thick canopy of trees and shrubs, the Jammu University campus is sizzling with the politics as the most powerful body of varsity teachers association goes to polls tomorrow. The Jammu University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) election is essentially a triangular and keen contest this time. The election is being contested on the manifesto of merits and demerits, advantages and disadvantages, elder and young, experience and energy and the list goes on. Arvind Jasrotia of the Law School; RD Sharma, Rector Kathua Campus and NK Tripathi of the department of Zoology are locked in a contest of elders versus young. While the supporters of Jasrotia, besides other points of merits, are campaigning for a youthful leadership, Sharma and Tripathi are selling their experience. Interestingly, the difference of age is not too much. However, what makes difference on this plank is that Jasrotia looks little handsome than others –has this anything to do with politics. May be, this matters in the campus. All these days the campus has been seeing a hot campaign and a full drawn politics. Vice Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo is reportedly watching the bout from the bay. Two of the contestants have drawn out their manifestos which even the political parties won’t be able to do. However, these are those manifestos which the voters rarely read. Interestingly, Jasrotia, who has added some glamour to the campaign, has gone with a crisp message – “democratization of the campus and the introduction of a participatory culture of governance of this institution of which we are part”. His manifesto questions the quantum of democracy available on the campus but stops short of explaining as what according to him amounts to autocracy. The present president of JUTA, Prof NR Sharma is not seeking a fresh term. Sharma is currently provost of the University Hostels –an administrative post. The president of the teaching associations assuming the administrative positions is also one of the major poll agenda tomorrow. The champions of “participatory democracy on the campus” say that the elected representative should not accept the administrative positions. This is one major factor which goes against RD Sharma who is already on administrative position. Many teachers say that Sharma’s performance as JUTA president during a previous tenure remained lackluster and in bargain of the elected position he probably clinched the administrative post. Tripathi too was till recently Officer on Special Duty. |
