Perhaps Ghulam Hassan Mir's expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party was long overdue but the story does not end here. The 'in-house' rebel has been compulsorily shown the door, but there are many who are opting voluntary exit from the party. However, the party is yet not over!
Former legislator and respected Shia leader Sadiq Ali has opted to himself open the party door and make a way out. "I am suffocated", Sadiq Ali the former MLA from Zadibal said as he rejoined the National Conference today in presence of party patron Dr Farooq Abdullah.
Sadiq had a battle of ideas and ideologies with another big and mighty Shia counterpart Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari. A business tycoon of formidable stature and now also a media baron, Ansari was in National Conference when Sadiq Ali left the party in early 2003 due to "suffocation". Now Ansari is in the PDP when Sadiq Ali is likely to make another exit out of suffocation.
An intellectual and widely traveled seasoned politician, Sadiq was one of the longest serving Members of the Legislative Council on National Conference ticket before being elected to the Legislative Assembly from Zadibal in 1996. However, in 2002 there was a suspicious rebel in his constituency which made Sadiq to loose election. Shahjan Dar was elected as an independent legislature who later went on symathise with the National Conference.
Sadiq Ali and his son Tanveer Sadiq, a Corporator in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, finally joined the National Conference.
His son Tanveer Sadiq, was a PDP Corporator and also the leader of opposition in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Zonal President for Zadibal constituency.
Several other leaders of youth wing of PDP also formally joined the National Conference. Sources said that some councilors of the PDP were willing to join the NC, but they have been asked to stay back, as they can lose their seats because of the anti-defection law.
