Jammu, Sept 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Police has identified at least three of the five killers of Lance Naik Mukhtar Ahmad Malik. On Monday, suspected Hizbul Mujhahideen module shot dead a territorial army soldier, a former Ikhwan commander who had gone home to grieve the death of his son in a road accident a few days ago.
Three of the suspected Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists have been identified as Umar Majeed Ganai, Javed Bhat and Owaise Raja. While Ganai is from Kulgam, Bhatt and Raja are from Khudwani in Anantnag. Superintendent of Police(SP) Kulgam Harmeet Singh confirmed that the trio are the main suspects behind the killing of Lance Naik. Two of the three men are in their 20s and are B category militants. The men posed as reporters and gained entry into Churat residence of the slain soldier.
One of the militants had a mobile phone and was recording footage on the mobile camera. Once they came face to face with Muktar, they shot him with a pistol hidden inside their pheran.
The militants immediately fled after firing at Mukhtar. Mukhtar was rushed to hospital in Kulgam but was was declared brought dead on arrival.
Malik's son died on September 15 after battling for four days in an Army hospital. The family was said to be preparing Rasm-e-Chauram' (post-death ritual) when terrorists barged in, pumping bullets in his body.
Chinar Corps tweeted - In a solemn ceremony at #BBcantt, #ChinarCorpsCdr & All Ranks paid homage to L/Nk Mukhtar Ahmad Malik, who was martyred in a dastardly act by the #terrorists at #Kulgam; Army stands in solidarity with his family.
Once a militant in 1990s, Malik was a top commander of the Ikhwan, a force comprising of Kashmiri militants who surrendered and worked with the government.
As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for the upcoming urban body polls and panchayat polls, uniformed men from Kashmir remain remain vulnerable. As many as four army personnel including Aurangzeb, Irfan Ahmad Dar and Lt Umar Fayaz have been killed by militants.
Sources said, "Men in uniform from Kashmir Valley largely remain vulnerable terror targets especially since they are unarmed on leave. Security forces have issued advisories from time to time to lie low when on leave, but the militant network have led to casualty of security forces.
