The Ministers complimented CII for taking an initiative for conducting an in depth study on the skill shortage in J & K and recommending the way ahead. The study has identified six sectors viz construction,, agro processing, hospitality, auto repair servicing , IT/ITES industries and household repairs which have a potential to grow in J & K. Addressing on the occasion, Dr Farooq Abdullah said the greatest problem today in the employment sector in the state is the mind set of the people to go in for Government jobs only. He exhorted the industry to assist the Government in changing this mind set by providing employment to the youths so that the burden on the Governments exchequer is reduced and the funds are diverted to the development of the core sectors. The implementation of the study recommendations and the adoption of the 6 ITIs by CII members will bring in a new life into the ITIs leading to enhancement of the skills of the youth and their subsequent absorption in the industry. Deep Kapuria, Chairman CII Northern Region while welcoming the guests said that we need to look at the mega trends in India viz an economic growth of 8 -9 % , integration into the global economy and a growing demographic advantage. We can either turn the demographic advantage into a success story by imparting skill to our youth or further increase the economic disparity by leaving them unskilled, he said and added ‘ if we skill our population which is the youngest in the world, we will be able to match the economy of Singapore in just two years’. He said that the study released by CII needs to be seriously considered and passionately implemented by the state government. Salil Singhal , Deputy Chairman - CII Northern Region said that the only way to growth and getting our youth skilled was to ensure good governance where in policy advocacy is not politicized.
