The security forces are happy that the militancy is on decline in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the investigators have found that instead of bringing in the arms, the saboteurs are now smuggling in fake currency from the other side of Line of Control.
Recent haul of fake currency in Jammu, Rajouri, Kathua and Srinagar districts is a pointer in this direction. Though the quantum of fake currency pumped in through the Line of Control bordering Jammu and Kashmir is not as much as it is coming through Nepal and other area but the security and enforcement agencies are worried over the trend.
In a recent presentation to the Interpol Regional Conference, the CBI has expressed concern over the smuggling of fake currency from Pakistani side. The security forces in Jammu and Kashmir are also being alerted to keep an eye on this kind of infiltration as well, sources told EARLY TIMES.
There has been a sudden spurt of smuggling of fake currency notes during last two years with such consignments being shipped from various countries in Gulf and South East Asia. "In the last two years there has been a spurt in smuggling of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) as indicated by large seizures at different places in the country as well as some neighbouring countries," said the CBI in its presentation, adding the consignments were mainly coming from the UAE, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Nepal.
the forensic examination of such seized notes indicated uniformity in replication of security features from which it could be inferred that the notes originate from the same source. During the course of investigation it was found that Southern and Western India and Western Uttar Pradesh had emerged as big markets of fake notes, he said.
Besides the routes passing through Jammu and Kashmir, the fake currencies are also being smuggled into India via land routes through Nepal, Bangladesh, Atari, Munabao-Khokrapar," the CBI presentation said and called for cooperation between various international security agencies to tackle the menace.
